U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and South Korean Minister of Defense Jong-Sup Lee hold a news conference at the Pentagon after meeting Thursday

In a joint communique released by the US Department of Defense, in a meeting with the South Korean defense minister, Lee Jong-sup, Secretary Austin stated: “Any nuclear attack against the United States or its allies and partners, including the use of non-strategic nuclear weapons, is unacceptable and will result in the end of the Kim regime.”

Speaking to reporters alongside his South Korean counterpart, Austin said, “Minister Lee and I had an outstanding discussion today,

“The United States remains fully committed to the defense [of South Korea]. Our extended deterrence commitment is firm and includes a full range of our nuclear and conventional and missile defense capabilities.”
